Summary

  • Docs: Site-owner AI features guidance unchanged.

01

Google Search Status Dashboard: no active ranking update

Official

What happened

As of this digest day, Ranking history shows no in-progress core/spam/ranking event. The latest completed 2026 spam item before later September activity remains the August 2026 spam update (started 2026-08-18).

Why it matters

A quiet dashboard is itself a signal: Roundtable volatility chatter should stay Unconfirmed until Google posts an incident. Use the dashboard as the rumor→official gate.

Peec AI chart: external links inside AI Overview answers rise toward ~26%

Publisher

Relays Peec AI / X chart via later SEJ analysis; sample method not fully disclosed.

What happened

Malte Landwehr (Peec AI) posted a chart on 2026-09-21 titled that external links in AI Overviews rose to about 26%, showing a sharp step around 11 Sep and 26.2% on Sep 20 (daily averages Aug 25–Sep 20). The chart measures share of AI Overviews with an external link inside answer text, not clicks.

Why it matters

For GEO, more in-text links can raise citation opportunity—but presence ≠ click. Pair any tracker link-share with GSC generative AI impressions and Web clicks; do not invent CTR from impression-only reports.

03

Unconfirmed: some AI Overview “links” open AI Mode instead of a webpage

Unconfirmed

Single-search recording / practitioner X; not a Google product post.

What happened

Around 2026-09-21, practitioners (e.g. Gagan Ghotra) shared recordings where underlined text inside an AI Overview opened an AI Mode conversation rather than an external URL. SEJ later notes this path resembles Google’s earlier mobile follow-up-into-AI-Mode behavior; breadth is unknown.

Why it matters

If Google classifies such elements as query refinements, Search Console may not count them as external clicks. Treat as a UI report until Google documents classification.

Google AI features docs (site owners): baseline unchanged

Official

What happened

Polled AI features guidance for site owners. Substance unchanged: same SEO fundamentals; no extra schema or AI-specific files required to appear in AI Overviews / AI Mode; robots.txt and snippet controls still apply.

Why it matters

Claims that special “AI schema” is required contradict Google’s own document. No doc change is a finding.
