Study: forcing Google AI Mode cuts external clicks ~18.8 pp without higher satisfaction

Publisher

Relays academic/field experiment via SEL; sample skewed younger/educated; 7-day treatment.

What happened

Search Engine Land (Danny Goodwin, 2026-09-23) reports a randomized experiment with 1,100 U.S. Chrome users (Mar 2026). Forcing searches into AI Mode cut the share of searches that reached an external site by 18.8 percentage points, reduced daily Google sessions (~0.92/day), and lowered clicks to news (−12.5 pp), Reddit (−21.2 pp), and Wikipedia (−9.9 pp). Satisfaction, usefulness, control, and trust scores fell; use of Bing/DuckDuckGo/Yahoo rose +11.2 pp. Pre-experiment AI Mode was only ~0.6% of searches.

Why it matters

Strong GEO traffic-risk evidence for an AI-first default—not for voluntary AI Mode use. Publishers should model referral downside if AI Mode share rises, and keep absolute GSC/Analytics counts beside share metrics.
