Ahrefs: AI Overviews on ~83% of branded searches (US desktop)

Vendor research

What happened

Ahrefs (Ryan Law / Xibeijia Guan, 2026-10-02): 232.8M US desktop SERP crawls Jul–Sep 2026. As of Sep 29, AIOs on 82.91% of branded-keyword crawls; Sep monthly average 73.3% branded vs 78.3% non-branded (gap narrowing). Exact-name panel of 100 Interbrand names: by Sep 30, 63/100 had an AIO; 76.2% of those AIOs in position one. Top external citations: Wikipedia, YouTube, LinkedIn.

Why it matters

Brand GEO risk: third parties can frame the brand in position-one AIOs. Track branded AIOs in Site Explorer / Brand Radar-style tools and GSC generative impressions—not CTR alone.

SEJ: standing instructions — AI Mode monitoring meets OpenAI Dots

Publisher

What happened

SEJ (2026-10-02) compares Google AI Mode information monitoring (widened Sep 28) with OpenAI Dots proactive/scheduled research: both keep work alive after the user leaves. Notes GSC includes AI Mode in reporting but does not clearly isolate monitoring-update metrics.

Why it matters

Freshness and source control matter when answers can update later without a new typed query.

Spam update still open; Barcelona SCL Deep Dive underway

Official

What happened

Spam incident still in progress. Search Central Live Deep Dive Europe runs Sep 30–Oct 2 in Barcelona; later attendee notes (SEJ Pulse) attribute crawl/site-move/recovery timing ranges to Gary Illyes on Oct 2.

Why it matters

Timing ranges are attendee-recap figures, not SLAs—useful for expectation-setting after spam/core impacts.
